  • Mar 28, 2011 · That's where most of your pedal "feel" comes from. Did you bench bleed the new master before you installed it? If you're having to pump the pedal to get firm brakes there is some air in there somewhere. If you don't bench bleed the master cylinder the brakes will feel VERY soft, and go almost to the floor before you get anything.

Spongy pedal on Suburban with new brakes - 07/06/07 05:50 PM I recently replaced the brakes (front disc and rear drum)on my 1999 Suburban. All pads replaced along with new rotors on the front and new drums on the rear.
Pump the brakes until the pistons are all the way out, then manually push them all the way in. Do this 3-5 times, install new pads, go to next caliper. Rinse and repeat in proper bleeding order, then when done hook up the Motiv Pressure bleeder and bleed normally. They called this "exercising" the brakes to work all air out. Worked for me!
