Replacing U joints should take no more than two hours, for a total cost (including parts) between $200 and $450. If you suspect the U joints on your car are starting to wear, follow the steps above — listen, look and then decide if you want to tackle a replacement yourself or choose a reliable auto mechanic.
Removing the driveshaft fom a 318 with deck and belly screen already off should not take more than an hour. I reinstall the drive shaft connected to the engine. Need one person to guide shaft other to lower engine into place. Use an engine boom and its a piece of cake. I've heard horror stories of what the dealers want to replace the shaft. I had to replace the entire driveshaft on my G1900 after I bought it used several years ago. Someone before me had butchered a u-joint replacement and it trashed the yokes. The whole shaft assembly cost me ~$200 then, so I am surprised it's almost double that now.
