Within the structure of methane, hydrogen atoms form a 109.5 degree angle with the carbon atom. Methane is an alkane and is an abundantly occurring natural gas. Furthermore, from Chapter 4.8, p. 105, you know that molecules with 4 bonds around a central atom with no lone pairs on the central atom are tetrahedral in shape. Because of this there is no good reason to draw a picture of methane, as opposed to simply writing out CH4. Ethanol is different however.
